Winning is gratifying no matter what sport you play, but owning back to back league titles, New York State’s Top Catholic League Golfer and the NSCHSGAA number one League Golfer gives you a feeling of great accomplishment and success for all your hard work. The 2019 Girls Golf team experienced the true meaning of hard work with this year being lead by third year Head Ashley Nimmo.

Going into this season the expectations were high for the team, only losing two seniors in 2018, but the understanding of being focused was clear. “I had two great captains in my returning seniors Chanel Hudson and Freya Do. They made sure the team knew what they were up against and kept the teams spirits high,” said Coach Nimmo.  Last year the team finished 9-3 overall with three All League players in Hudson, Do and sophomore Allison Amoruso retuning to help defend their 2018 Title.

This young team of 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen took the leadership to hart and went 14-0 and then captured their third CHSAA League Title since 2014. This young team will be returning two CHSAA Champions in Amoruso and new comer Kaitlyn Browne in 2020.  Amoruso is the 2019 League Champion. Earning her title in a play off round tied at 7-over par 79 verse Victoria Dowling of Our Lady of Mercy Academy.

The Friars will not only will be defending its Team Title, individual Title but Browne will be returning to Defend her 2019 CHSAA state title as a junior. Her win wasn’t easy as she entered into sudden death against OLMA’s Dowling at 9-over par 79.

Browne joined team this year from Southampton High School where she finished 5th in suffolk county and 16th in New York State in 2018. “I always knew it was possible to win a title and I was training very hard all season long,” said Browne. Her determination was on point as she walked away with the New York State Catholic Schools Golf Title. “I was very proud of my 3rd place league performance and the chance to play in states,” said Browne. She is a great example of when you give someone a second chance success is possible.

Brown is looking forward to the 2020 season and will be working hard in the off season to improve. “I hope to lead the team to another successful season and all this would not be possible without the support and encouragement of our coach.”

Returning a young team to defend SA back to back titles, continue an undefeated streak, and the number 1 and 2 players in the league is a problem any school would love to have. Coach Nimmo said this year, “we would have to bring our A game and give 100% when we faced some teams.” They did and in 2020 what will they bring!
