On Tuesday, October 17th, the Friars boys’ soccer team defeated Kellenberg by a final score of 3-1. Saint Anthony’s rebounded from a frustrating 1-0 loss to Fairfield Prep on Saturday, October 14th and got back on track.

When Junior right back Will Greco reflected on the victory he said “We came out with intensity, something we’ve struggled to do in the past. The pregame-talk and intense warm-up,” Greco continued, “helped us compete from whistle to whistle.”

The Friars defense was once again very formidable. Senior goalkeeper Rob Leamey had three saves on the day, only allowing one goal. Since October 1st, Leamey has only allowed four goals; meanwhile the offense has scored an impressive twenty-four goals during that time.

On offense, the Friars were able to execute on most of their scoring opportunities after being blanked by Fairfield Prep. They did a tremendous job of distributing the ball with Chad Meyers, Andrew Weltner, and Bryan Sierra all dishing out assists. Michael Algieri, JJ Forster and Aidan Wilson all scored their fourth goals of the season. Algieri noted, “we took a step in the right direction.”

When asked how important the victory was for the team going forward, Junior midfield Michael Hall said, “we played very well and bounced back after a poor performance against Fairfield Prep.” Hall depicted the game vs. Kellenberg as a “turning point,” adding “hopefully we can compete for a state title down the road.”

Tuesday’s victory marked the eighth time this season that the Friars have outscored their opponents by two or more goals.

On Thursday, October 19th, the Friars pummeled St. Dominic’s by a final score of 7-0. Saint Anthony’s will look to keep their offensive momentum going as they will play host to their rival Chaminade on Wednesday, October 25th, 7:00 p.m., in what will be their final matchup St. Anthony’s-Chaminade regular season matchup. Both teams are eager for a victory after an unsatisfying 0-0 draw in their last affair.
