On Friday January 26, 2018 the St. Anthony’s Friars defeated St. Dominic’s by a final score of 61-40. The Friars’ trouncing of the visiting St. Dominic’s was their eleventh win of the season, improving their record to 11-5 (4-2 CHSAA). The Friars were led by star forward Tyrone Lyons who scored twenty-six points and grabbed eleven rebounds. Antonio Lopez also contributed by almost recording his fourth double-double of the season, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds.

Forward Tyrone Lyons

The Friars bounced back from two consecutive tough losses—including a demoralizing 61-41 defeat to the rival Chaminade. The Friars asserted their dominance against the 3-10 St. Dominic’s squad and again proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in the CHSSA. The Friars had a difficult time getting the lid off the basket in the first half but their defense carried the team and led to some easy transition points. Their defense was able to contain St. Dominic’s Rob Rossiter, who is a top 15 scorer in the league. Rossiter, who averages 13.2 points per game, was bottled up and held to a mere five points.

The second half was a much different story, as the Friars’ offense began to ignite. The double-double machine, Tyrone Lyons, put up a mesmerizing twenty-six points and corralled in eleven boards. Lyons, who averages 15.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game, is the eighth ranked scorer in the league. Friday marked the fourth game in which Lyons scored more than twenty points and he also recorded his fifth double-double.

Any win is impressive, but a victory without a star player is even more remarkable. The Friars were able to steamroll St. Dominic’s without the very versatile Jon Harewood (illness). Harewood, who averages 14.3 points per game, is a top 10 scorer and he is a pure game-changer. Harewood’s presence is felt by everyone in the gym each and every game. Although the absence was a significant blow to St. Anthony’s, the Friars stayed cool, calm, and collected to ultimately persevere.

The Friars will look to keep this momentum going forward as they host Chaminade on Friday February 2, 2018. The Homecoming crowd will be electrifying and full of enthusiasm. Hopefully the Friars can feed off the energy of a packed St. Anthony’s gym and get revenge on the divisional foe.
