The Friars swept Monsignor Farrell in a two game series. The Friars outscored Farrell 11-6 in those two games. Game 1 took place on February 8th at Dix Hills Ice Rink with the Friars winning 5-3. Game 2 was played on February 12th at the SI Pavilion with a final score of 6-3 Friars.
The Friars top line totally dominated this series. #21 Matt Coronato finished with 3 goals and 2 assists. #43 Nick Cozzi totaled 3 goals and 3 assists. #17 Matt Tullo finished with 2 goals and 4 assists. Other notables were #86 Tim Allen with 2 goals and an assist, #84 John Forlenza with a goal, #9 Ryan Fitzmaurice with an assist and #5 Ryan Haight with an assist.
Game 1 started off the wrong way for the Friars as 2:33 seconds into the game the Friars were down 1-0. The Friars had many opportunities in the first period but could not cash in so the period ended down 1-0. Whatever Coach Lund must have said to the team during the break must have worked because 24 seconds into the second period #21 Matt Coronato scored a power play goal assisted by # 17 Matt Tullo. The lead was short lived as Farrell came back an made it 2-1. The Friars however came back and tied it up as #21 Matt Coronato scored again with the assists coming from #43 Nick Cozzi and #5 Ryan Haight. The Friars once again gave the lead right back as Farrell scored again with 2:38 remaining in the second.
Going into the third the Friars decided to switch goalies and go with #37 Silvio Losardo. The Friars took an early penalty to start the period. That penalty changed the course of the game and the series. #86 Tim Allen scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game and just has the penalty was expiring #43 Nick Cozzi found the back of the net to give the Friars the lead. That lead was a lead they would never relinquish. The Friars would tack on one more courtesy of #43 Nick Cozzi. Coach Lund said to the team after the second period to “keep shooting because the goalie was going to have to let a couple squeak by” and that he did. Coach also said “the team must be more prepared in the first and come out more attacking.”
Game 2 was a completely different story for the Friars as they scored 4 goals in the first period and that would make it 7 consecutive dating back to game 1. The first goal was netted by #86 Tim Allen only 1:14 into the period. The Friars first line stuck again as # 17 Matt Tullo scored and only 43 seconds after that he made it 3-0. #84 John Forlenza scored the fourth goal in the period giving them a commanding lead after one. Farrell did however score in the second but #21 Matt Coronato answered right back with a goal. Farrell did score late in the second and early in the third however to cut their deficit to two and trailed 5-3. #43 Nick Cozzi eliminated Farrell’s chances of moving on by scoring the 6th and final goal in the Friars win.
The Friars seeking their third consecutive championship now advance to the finals to play archrival Chaminade in a best 2 out of 3 series. Game 1 will be on 2/15/18 at Dix Hills Ice Rink, Game 2 will be on 2/17/18 at Cantiague Park and Game 3 if necessary will be on 2/21/18 at Dix Hills Ice Rink.
