One of the values that the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn has placed upon the students of St. Anthony’s is the need to be kind and empathetic towards the less fortunate and towards those in need.  In all the events and activities here and around St. Anthony’s, you can see these values and others similar to them.  From Brother Vincent and the Campus Ministry that continuously conduct food and clothing drives at different times of the year, to the Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang that caringly makes sandwiches for the hungry, there is a great contingency of students who faithfully follow in the footsteps of St. Francis.  This academic year, the school has undertaken a new initiative to encourage and foster the students’ involvement in volunteerism and community service, both in and out of the St. Anthony’s community.  All students are now required to complete five volunteer hours with one of the school’s service organizations and five hours within their own community. The goal in mind, of course, is to develop our students’ sense of responsibility, to the communities to which they belong.
Recently, while I was strolling the halls correcting uniform violations, I polled a handful of students about the new community service requirement.  With most believing in the true value of such an initiative, many commented on the real benefits and growth that may come with this new requirement.  It was great to hear the positive outlook and comments.  I’m listing some brief comments of what some of your own children have said about this initiative.
Take a look:
  • “I feel we all will benefit from some real world experiences.”
  • “I love the fact that I’ll be making a difference in so many people’s lives.”
  • “That’s what we’re supposed to do – give back.”
  • “It’s about making a positive impact in other’s lives.”
  • “I can already tell that it will be fun.”
  • “I think my classmates will gain a whole new perspective.”
  • “I think it’s inspirational.”
Of course, there are other reasons that serve to benefit our students as they learn for themselves the real value of community service.  Employers say that seeing a resume with community service on it tells them that the prospective employee will have real world communication skills that can benefit their clients. People who have spent time volunteering in the community tend to be softer, kinder spirits with an understanding and compassion towards others. What employer wouldn’t want their employee to have those characteristics?
Those seeking jobs have commented that their experiences working in different communities has broadened their own networks, helping them to make real connections with all walks of life.
With the start of the new year, and end of cold weather being weeks away, this is a great time for students who have yet to fulfill their community service obligations to start planning their project.  How great would it be if all of the parents supporting their children joined in on the efforts within their own communities.  Together, as one community, we would impact dozens of other communities across Long Island.  For those seeking opportunities in the community, a great place to start is with your own parish or local soup kitchen.  There is always a need for an extra set of hands.

Congratulations on teaching your children the value and benefit of being an asset to mankind.
