The Saint Anthony’s Varsity Girls’ basketball team, led by Head Coach Hugh Flaherty, started off the season strong, defeating Moore Catholic High School, 60-48. This year’s Girls’ Varsity team has 10 returning players and added 5 new players to round out the squad. Their current record of 10-4 has put them in a good position leading into the middle of the season, with playoffs not too far off. Last year’s season concluded with a 12-11 record and the Friars getting knocked out of the semifinal round to Our Lady of Mercy with a score of 44-54 who went on to win the CHSAA Tournament.

Last season Saint Anthony’s lost to Sacred Heart Academy twice, with a total combined loss of 67-85. This year the girls have stepped up their game and won their first game against Sacred Heart with a score of 67-38. Alexis Mitas ‘25 (point guard) hit eight three pointers and scored a total of 33 points, helping SA get the win. The next faceoff is February 10th, and SA is looking for another victory if they keep up the strong confidence. Currently in league play the Friars have faced Our Lady Of Mercy, Holy Trinity, Sacred Heart Academy and St. Marys have only one loss from this group. SA will face all the league teams a second time come February, and they hope to come out on top.

Junior Amanda Pacie

There are many star players this season, but with half of the games left to play, there’s still time for the players to prove themselves. Alexis Mitas had her best game yet when she hit eight three pointers, and a total of 33 points in one game against Sacred Heart. Alexis Mitas has kept a steady amount of points each game averaging 10 points a game. Another player that’s been on a roll is Amanda Paci ‘24 (point guard); she increases the team scores each game and leads the team in steals. Shani Clark ‘25 (point guard) led the team to victory against Holy Trinity with 17 points and nine rebounds. With the help of the Head Coach Hugh Flaherty, and two assistant coaches Anthony Smith and Mike Grant, SA hopes to make it to the Championship game and recapture the crown as they did in 2016.

Come out and support starting March 24th when playoff season begins.
