On Friday, January 12, the St. Anthony’s boys varsity basketball team faced off against Holy Trinity. After an intense, closely matched game, St. Anthony’s fell to the Trinity Titans, 56-53.

Although it wasn’t a win for the Friars, there were still some notable performances on the court: Jon Harewood racked up 14 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds; Tyrone Lyons had 14 points and 5 rebounds; Mike Reagan had 11 points; Antonio Lopez collected 7 points as well as 7 rebounds; and Andre Snoody had 5 points along with 6 rebounds.

In the first half, St. Anthony’s maintained a steady lead. Up by seven points at the end of the first, and five points at the end of the half, the Friars came out into the second half ready to play aggressively.

Halfway into the third quarter, the Titans pulled ahead, but the Friars, playing strategically and aggressively, retook the lead by the end of the quarter.

However, by the fourth quarter, the game was down to the wire. The Friars, who had fallen behind by a few points, tied it up with 1:19 left in the game at 51-51. Then, with 3.3 seconds left, Holy Trinity gained a slight advantage, leading 56-53. Friars were unable to score, leaving everyone speechless.

Senior Mike Regan pointed to the team’s coherence as the source of its early dominance, saying, “Our coach always talks about sticking together, defense first, and how defense wins championships. We just like to stick together as a team and the seniors love to stay together as a family. That’s how it is.”

According to Coach Lagano, the Friars’ greatest downfall was at the foul line. “When we’re up 4 or 5 points, and [we] miss the front end of a 1 on 1…they came back and made some 3’s in the second half and made some tough shots. I don’t think it’s about adjustments; I think it was just that we were so poor at the free throw line.”

The Friars took the loss in stride, and hope to use the game as a learning experience. Senior captain Jon Harewood plans to use the game as motivation. “I do feel like I could have done more, but the end of the day it’s January—playoffs are a month away. I’m going to use it as motivation for the next time.” Senior guard Mike Regan felt the same, saying, “We are going to go to practice tomorrow and work hard and just get it. It’s a new day.”

On February 9th, the St. Anthony’s Friars play the Holy Trinity Titans at their home court, where the Friars will get their revenge.
