The hockey season is underway and the Friars are coming into the season as the team to
beat. As expected, their fiercest competition and biggest rival is Chaminade. This year’s Friar team is comprised of hardworking players that seek to improve in every aspect of the game.

They are a versatile group with tremendous depth. They have two solid goaltenders, an
impressive defense built on size and speed, and an offense that can move the puck and light the lamp. Their special teams (players on the ice during a power play) are tops in the league and can score at any moment.

Coach Lund explained what it would take to win a championship, “In order to win a championship the team must have discipline, teamwork, never taking any team lightly, believing you can win and working as hard and as smart as you can every practice and game. We are the team to beat and can’t take that lightly. Each game is a stepping stone to improving for the next one so we are prepared for the LI Playoffs and NY State Championship game which is our ultimate goal.”

This season as seen many players step up in a big way, Ryan Mahlmeister and Joe Pacifico
(Asst. Captain) have really surprised the coaching staff with their scoring. The Power Play
has been led by Ryan Mahlmeister, Nick Cozzi, Greg Barnych (Asst. Captain), Michael
Haggerty (Asst. Captain) and Andrew Sciaretta (Captain). The penalty kill has been strong
with contributions from Michael Haggerty, Andrew Sciaretta, Connor Szambel, Ryan Haight,
Nick Cozzi, and Greg Barnych.

As of January 28th, the Friars stand at 13-0 having scored an impressive 90 goals while only giving up 21. They swept the season series against Chaminade winning 8-4, 3-2 and an exciting 4-3 victory in the final seconds.
