St. Anthony’s varsity football (2-1) took on Monsignor Farrell (3-0) at Cy Donnelly Field on Friday, Sept. 29th. The Friars broke out to an early lead and never let Farrell back into the competition, winning 35-13.

Here’s a recap of how the game unfolded:

First Half

To start the game, the Friars won the coin toss and elected to defer. This turned out to be a good decision because St. Anthony’s forced Farrell to punt on their first drive. After an exchange of scoreless drives, the Friars got on the board. QB Greg Campisi ran it into the end zone and Jeremy Miller added the extra point to put the Friars up 7-0. On Farrell’s next drive they were forced to punt, but Makhai Murphy fumbled the punt giving the ball back to Farrell. Murphy wouldn’t let that fumble affect him and made critical plays later in the game.

At the end of the first quarter, St. Anthony’s led 7-0. Farrell attempted a field goal, to follow, but it was blocked by Makhai Murphy. This is where the Friars really took control of the game. After a first down completion to Julian Chung, and then another one to Heron Maurisseau- O’Neal, Greg Campisi found Sean Bryan for a 36 yard touchdown to put the Friars up 14-0.

The Friars showed no sign of slowing down during the second quarter and advanced the ball again, down to the one yard line. Senior Julian Chung punched it in for a touchdown, putting St Anthony’s up 21-0. After exchanging three and outs, Farrell got the ball back looking to finally turn the game around. The Friar defense would have none of it. Makhai Murphy had a big pass deflection down the field to prevent a turn of momentum. Farrell fumbled the ball and it was recovered by St Anthony’s. On the ensuing drive Campisi rushed for a 25 yard touchdown, his second rushing touchdown of the game. The Friars led 28-0 at halftime.

Second Half

St Anthony’s got the ball to begin the second half, but Farrell forced them to punt. Farrell finally got on the board with a touchdown pass from QB Michael Regan to Christian Tait in the resulting drive. Campisi looked to continue his success, at the end of the third, but made his first mistake of the game which resulted in a Farrell interception. The Friar defense supported Campisi in a big way. Grayson Cherubino picked up his second sack of the game, Makhai Murphy picked up another pass deflection, and Philip Platania came away with an interception.

Farrell got the ball into the end zone on a touchdown pass during the fourth quarter, but their hopes were soon to be dashed. Sean Bryan put the game away, running for a 73 yard touchdown, increasing the 15 point Farrell deficit to 22.

The Friars look to continue their recent success, taking on tough league competition in Cardinal Hayes High School, last year’s league champions, Sat. Oct. 5th, 4:00pm at SUNY Maritime.
