On Friday, November 2nd, #1 seed St Anthony’s took on #8 seed Christ the King in the quarter-finals of the playoffs at CY Donnelly Field. The Friars looked to repeat their dominant 42-13 win against CTK from earlier in the year.
The Friars got the job done beating CTK 31-21.
Here’s Coach Pasante’s thoughts on the match-up during halftime:
St Anthony’s got off to a fast start scoring all 31 of their points in the first half. QB Greg Campisi accounted for three of the Friar touchdowns with two in the air and one on the ground. Both of his TD passes were to senior WR Heron Maurisseau- O’Neal. The other touchdown was scored on a run by junior Kyle Angus. Besides the two short touchdown runs, the Friars weren’t really able to get the running game going only totaling 54 yards on the ground. Jeremy Miller added 3 points with a field goal towards the end of the first half.
The defense was outstanding in the first half, shutting out CTK. Assistant Coach Harry Passante was asked what he thought the defense did the best in the first half “I think we just all did our 1/11th, everybody is doing their job, we lined up correctly. They came out in some different formations in pregame that we adjusted to right away. We had faith in our kids and they have been running to the football and doing their job.” Coach was also asked if anyone has stuck out to him, “A couple of young guys, junior James Errante came out there and made some plays and has been lining up correctly and doing everything that we ask of him. He’s definitely a guy we are very high on right now.” Errante had an interception late in the first half.
Christ the King certainly did not quit in this game. An onside kick with 5:05 remaining in the game led to a CTK TD that cut the lead to 10. CTK scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. The lead was just too much to overcome as St Anthony’s would hold on to win 31-21.
St Anthony’s will take on Iona Prep on Friday, November 10th at CY Donnelly Field at 7:00pm. The team is encouraging all Friar fans to show up and wear black as they will try to advance to the championship game.
