On February 2, 2018 the Friars were able to get revenge on their conference foe, Chaminade, by a final score of 54-47. The gym was packed, the crowd was electrifying, and even Bishop John Barres was in attendance. This Hawaiian night proved to be a special one, and the Friars were able to turn all of that positive energy into a statement victory. The Friars overcame a ten point halftime deficit and notched their tenth win of the season.

Head Coach Sal Lagano

Just ten days after suffering a deflating 61-41 loss to Chaminade in Mineola, the revamped Friars were able to put on a show. St. Anthony’s was without star guard Jon Harewood in their 61-40 victory vs. St. Dominic’s, but thankfully Harewood was able to return in time for Friday’s game. He finished the game with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Friday’s victory marked the fourteenth time Harewood scored more than ten points and the third time he scored north of twenty. The Top 10 scoring senior is averaging 14.9 points per game. Antonio Lopez who is averaging 9.3 points per game had a huge game on Friday. Lopez tallied his fourth double-double of the season while putting up 13 points and 11 rebounds. Tyrone Lyons who averages 14.8 points per game scored 10 points and hauled in 8 rebounds. These three Friars especially propelled the team to a much needed victory.

Senior Guard Jon Harewood

The Friars were down 32-22 at the start of the third quarter, and Head Coach Lagano must have given a very fervent and motivational halftime speech. St. Anthony’s came out from the locker room as a completely different team. They started to clamp and shut down Chaminade’s offense. Chaminade could only muster up six and nine points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. The Friars locked down Chaminade’s Michael O’Connell and Bobby Connors. Both O’Connell and Connors are Top 15 scorers and they were held in check. O’Connell managed to score 1 point and Connors tallied up 10 points.

The game was evidently a tale of two halves, and the Friars were able to edge out the victory in order to stay towards the top of the conference. Friday was the most attended game of year, and it was a very special privilege that the former Princeton basketball player, Bishop John Barres, could be in attendance.
