For the Friars, fall sports have ended and winter sports are back in session. Varsity girls’ basketball, one of the Friars’ more dominant teams, is ready to get back to work. For the team, success is winning states, anything less would be a failure.

In the 2016-2017 season, suffered a loss at the hands of Monsignor Scanlan in the state semifinals. The Friars lost against the Crusaders 53-49 in a close game. Scanlan went on to lose the state final in overtime. who went on to the finals where they lost in overtime. 13-5

The team, though, isn’t letting last year’s loss define them. Head coach Hughie Flaherty explained that “it goes without saying that we are working for a State Championship. With hard work and determination we can achieve that goal.” The team is ready to work hard throughout the season to achieve the goal that they were not able to achieve last year.

Many key players contribute to the team, but a key player to watch out for this season is Lauren Hackett.

“She kind of makes our engines perform on all cylinders,” said Coach Flaherty. Some other key players that stand out are Ashia Smith, Toni Kinard, Tamia Lawhorne, Taylor Lawhorne, and Sydney Taylor.

From tireless defense to three point shooting, the team will definitely have an extraordinary season this year. Of his players, coach had the following to say: “Ashia Smith’s tireless defense, Toni Kinard’ three point shooting, Tamia and Taylor Lawhorne’s inside and outside game coming together, we do actually have twins as bookends. Sydney Taylor’s tremendous passing and three point shooting, pretty much rounds out the Friars’ attack.”

“The juniors actually stepped up big last year. They are pretty much seasoned juniors,” said Coach, “they played a lot last year and are ready to be on the court, mainly because of their work ethic.” With a set of seasoned juniors and sky-high expectations, the Friars are ready to take on the league.
